Daubigny's painting of the same theme was shown at the Salon of
1857 and then entered the national collections at the Louvre. The
etching was done for the publication L'Artiste and went through
several extensive printings. The commentary in L'Artiste
remarks significantly:
"Daubigny
is not only one our leading landscapists, he also occupies a high
rank amoung our engravers using etching. He himself has reproduced
- and one can see with what a luminous and vivid needle - his landscape
of Le Printemps, one of the canvases in the Salon where nature
most freely breathes in all its freshness and its freedom. Daubigny
has translated himself as a poet, or rather he has made, with respect
to his painting, an original and new work".
